ASUU threatens to embark on strike

ASUU threatens to embark on strike
ASUU
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
The ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Prof. Olusoji Sowande, said this at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
Sowande said that the union was planning to toe this part after several efforts to ensure that the government address the pending demands, proved abortive.
He said that the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on funding of state universities, breaches of the conditions of service and re-negotiation of the agreement, were still pending.
The coordinator also mentioned other demands like the exclusion of Nigerian universities from Pension Management Company and non-release of NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund.

He said that funding of state universities, earned academic allowance and renegotiation of the agreement were parts of the outstanding issues.
Sowande recalled that the union had embarked on strike in 2012 and 2013 as part of the efforts to make the government implement the agreement, adding that the issues remained unresolved.
He said that the 2009 agreement provided for a periodic review after every three years which had not been done.
“The review of the agreement should have been undertaken in 2012 and 2015 but that did not happen.‎
“The implication is that our union has shown enough patriotism and understanding on these matters in the last four years.
“We are perplexed and disappointed that both the Federal and State Governments are not responding to our consistent appeals to bring about genuine transformation in the education sector, ‘’ he said.
According to him, embarking on strike has never been a favourable choice as the Students and ASUU members have always suffered the pains more.
“It is unfortunate that the only language government appears to respect and listens to is that of industrial action like strike,”he said.
The don said that the National officers of the union had met with the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on May 10 and tabled ten-point demand.
He said that the minister had promised that the issues would be resolved within two weeks but nothing had been done till now.
Sowande said that based on MOU signed in November 2013, “Nigerian universities requires N1.3 trillion to revitalise the system’’, adding that the government was already in arrears of N605 billion as at the third quarter of 2016.
He said that the government had refused to release N128 billion and N250 billion respectively for the earned academic allowance of three years after the MoU was signed.‎
“In order to forestall this avoidable crisis, we appeal to all genuinely progressive individuals and groups to prevail on both the Federal and State Governments to commence release of funds for the listed purposes.
“This is to arrest the brewing and potentially combustible situation in the Nigerian university system before it degenerated into a serious conflagration,” he said.

Military Commences on Onslaught Against N/Delta Militants

Col. Sani Usman
The Nigerian military has commenced the planned onslaught against the Niger Delta militants to ride the region of all criminal activities, militancy and sabotage of the nation’s economic infrastructures.
This is coming after the Nigerian Army amassed troops, arms and ammunition for the special exercise code-named Crocodile Smile in support of the larger Operation Delta Safe within the nine states of the region.
The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, in a statement on Saturday, said: “The 133 Special Forces Battalion of Nigerian Army troops have carried out a precursor operation to Exercise ‘Crocodile Smile’ aimed at getting rid of all forms of criminal activities in the Niger Delta geo-political region of Nigeria”.
Usman said that in the course of the operation, “five militants that attacked the troops were killed in action, while numerous others were injured and 23 suspects were arrested”.
He noted that the operations which was conducted on Friday, was carried out by the Special Forces at the militants camps.
He listed the items recovered from the camps to include two AK-47 rifles, 11 pump action guns, a locally made revolver pistol, 292 cartridges of live ammunition, 199 rounds of AK-47 rifle ammunition, four electricity generating sets and a camp gas cooker.
He said the troops also recovered an abandoned engine boat left by the fleeing criminals.

Asari Dokubo not dead – IYC

The Ijaw Youth Council has dismissed the rumoured attack by military personnel on Alhaji Asari Dokubo, founder of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF).
There were widespread rumours of Asari being killed in an alleged confrontation with soldiers on Saturday morning.
But in a statement by the spokesman for IYC, Eric Omare, on Saturday said the former militant warlord was in good health and there was never a confrontation between him and military men.
IYC, an umbrella body for Ijaw youths, also called for the immediate withdrawal of troops from the region particularly the creeks of the Niger Delta following the recent ceasefire deal reached with militant youths and stakeholders in the region.
The group stated that there was no reason for military deployment in the region, adding that such was already causing tension and fear among people in the region.

Soyinka wants History restored in Nigerian schools’ curriculum

Wole Soyinka
Photo: dailytimes.com.ng

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, on Thursday advocated the reinstatement of History as a subject in Nigerian schools.
Mr. Soyinka spoke in Lagos at a press conference to unveil the beneficiaries of an initiative between the Wole Soyinka Foundation and the Cedars Institute, Notre Dame University, Lebanon.
“I learnt not so long ago that history has been taken off the curriculum in this country. Can you imagine that? History? What is wrong with history? Or maybe I should ask, what is wrong with some people’s head?”
Criticisms have continued to trail the government’s removal of history studies from primary and secondary schools’ curriculum since the 2009/2010 academic session.
Last May, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, said the federal government was taking steps to restore the subject in the schools’ curriculum.
“Somebody who doesn’t know his history is even worse than dead. So this government is going to bring back history,” Mr. Adamu had said.
“It would even be better if we study local history first. You have to know who you are before you can be anything in this world.
“I believe this government is going to return history back to the curriculum.”

Mr. Soyinka, a professor of Comparative Literature, described History as “life”.
“History is so fundamental to self knowledge, to identity, to understanding where you came from and therefore where you might be headed,” he said
“So how can a subject like History be excised from the curriculum of any school?”
Asked whether the UNESCO’s statement that “the war for peace must be waged in the mind” should be a panacea to the war against insurgency, Mr. Soyinka said the appropriate response for the insurgents is to “return aggression with aggression”.
“UNESCO was founded on this basis, that since wars between human beings, communities begin in the mind, it is in the mind the war for peace must begin,” Mr. Soyinka said.
“I always find that paradoxical statement very instructive. But we mustn’t simplify wars, we mustn’t simplify the solution or the complex causes that lead to war.
“Boko Haram, for instance, is a result of religious lunacy and intoxication. There’s no other explanation for it. And if somebody is trying to kill you, I believe you have a responsibility to kill them first. And so I don’t want to present myself as a candidate for Nobel Prize for Peace because I’m not a very peaceful person.
“I believe very much that aggression must be met by, every possible means, aggression.”
“I’m not saying I’m dedicated to peace. I’m dedicated to culture, to intellectualism, to the expansion of human horizon’s creativity.
“Believe me I’m no evangelist for peace. Not when people are torturing, killing children, kidnapping people who we sent to go and learn. For me they got to be wiped out.”

Ekiti outlaws free cattle grazing; offenders face stiff penalty

Ayodele-Fayose-3-1025
The Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the bill banning free cattle grazing in the state.
The bill prescribes six months imprisonment without an option of fine for offenders. It also bans movement of cattle in the state after 6pm.
The passage of the bill followed the submission of a report of the Joint Committees on Agriculture and Environment to the House.
The speaker of the House, Kola Oluwawole, who presided over the plenary, said the bill would reduce the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.
The bill is tagged Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti, 2016. It prohibits cattle, sheep and goats from grazing on undesignated land.
It also provides that, “The Governor shall by an order designate land in each of 16 Local Government Areas in the state in respect of which Cattle or Ruminants may be permitted to graze.
“No person shall cause or permit any cow, oxen, sheep as well as goat under his or her control to graze on any land in which the Governor has not designated as ranches.
“No cattle or other ruminants shall by any means move in the night, movement shall be between 7 a.m and 6p.m.”

The bill was informed by the need to stem clashes between farmers and herders, one of which caused the death of two persons in May at Oke Ako, a community in Ikole Local Government Area of the state.
But the cattle rearing community in the state had during the public hearing on the bill, rejected the provision banning night grazing.
Instead, they proposed that those on night grazing should get permission from the state government, saying compelling situations could make them embark on movement at night.
They also disagreed with section 2(1) and 2 which suggests that designated ranches will be provided by the government to restrict the cattle to a portion, saying this will lead to the death of the cattle.
They also suggested that the bill need not ban the carrying of firearms, knives and matches as the country already had enough laws dealing with that, saying enacting another law could run contrary to the provision of the constitution.

Nigeria Fatally Becoming an Islamic State, Say Christian Leaders

The Nigerian Christians Elders Forum (NCEF), an affiliate of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said on Wednesday that Nigeria is fatally sliding into an Islamic State under President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
Its position came in response to serial killing of Christians in the northern part of the country in recent times. Last week Christian students were brutally killed and burnt in Talata Marafa, Zamfara State, North West Nigeria over alleged blasphemy.

The NCEF also cited the arrest of Mr Joe Chinakwe for the naming of his dog ‘Buhari’ in Ogun State as a clear case of discrimination by government against Christians in the country.
According to the NCEF Chairman, Chief Solomon Asemota, SAN, “There is a bill now pending before the National Assembly, titled “NGO Regulatory Bill” intended to silence NGO’s including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

“It is not in dispute that Nigeria is an Islamic State contrary to Section 10 of the Constitution. What is in dispute is whether Nigeria is ruled by mainstream Muslims or by Islamist Jihadists. We plead with the Sultan to appreciate that Nigeria is safer and more peaceful when the Government of the Federation or of a State does not adopt any religion as State Religion.”
The NCEF explained that the overt dominance of the National Security Council by members of the Muslim faith, the expressed reservations whether Vice President Yemi Osinbajo plays any role in the council.
“It is as a result of the understanding (or lack of it) of civilized Jihad that we are apprehensive of those in the “Security and Intelligence Committee” of the Federal Government by some unexplained reasons are mainly Muslims. President Buhari, (Muslim), Chief of Defense (Christian), Chief of Army Staff, Chief of air Staff, Minister of Defense, Minister of Internal Affairs, Inspector General of Police, National Security Adviser, Director General of DSS are all Muslims from the North.
“We are not too sure whether the Vice President is a member of this Committee following information that he was once excluded from the meeting the President called. When the Vice President summoned the same meeting in the absence of President Buhari who was away in the UK, there was resistance and the meeting had to end abruptly,” they stressed.
Asemota maintained that going by the activities of the Fulani herdsmen, it is clear that a Jihad is been staged through the back door, “the atrocities committed by Fulani Herdsmen such as number of persons killed, farmland and buildings destroyed with other properties during the same period were not included.
“The conclusion which we, Christians, draw is that jihad is being committed against our country, Nigeria, especially when the cohesive instrument of state is in the hands of three ethnic nationalities and one religion. This enlists fear in the minds of the populace, especially Christians.”
The group also differed with the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, on the interpretation of the secular status of Nigeria.
“NCEF begs to disagree with his Eminence that Nigeria is a multi-religious state, based on the fact that the Constitution which forms the basis, upon which our founding fathers agreed to live together as a country, provides under Section 10 that ‘the Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion’,” it said.

Mysterious explosion kills 1 in Yobe, injures soldier

FILE PHOTO
An iron pipe worked on by a local welder in Damaturu, Yobe State, exploded Wednesday, killing the technician and seriously injuring a soldier who brought the pipe, eyewitnesses and army officials said.
The deafening explosion which echoed all over the town has caused serious panic as residents feared it was an attack from Boko Haram insurgents.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the explosion occurred when a local welder was using heat flame to weld a pipe brought by soldiers, for use as improvised communication antenna needed for their security vehicle.
It was not clear whether the pipe contained explosives.
A witness said as the welder began to work, the pipe exploded killing him and ripping the soldier’s abdomen open.
Iman Ibrahim, who hawks wares around the area, told journalists that “the explosion had shredded the body of the welder, while the soldier who was standing close by and giving the welder instructions on what to do was seriously injured”.
“We all saw the soldier sprawling on the ground with his entire intestine ripped out of his stomach, and surprisingly he was still alive and conscious of all that was happening. But I doubt if he would survive even though he was rushed to the hospital,” said Mr. Ibrahim.
The spokesman of 127 Taskforce Brigade Lieutenant, George Okupe, who confirmed the development to journalists on phone, said “some soldiers from the troops in Goniri here in Yobe State brought a pipe to be welded to increase the height of the antenna on one of their hilux car to the welder and the unfortunate incident occurred in the process of the job”.
“The incident occurred at about 10.30 am at the shop of the welder. One of our soldiers was wounded in the accidental explosion with one civilian. Both have been taken to the Gen. Sani Abatcha Specialist Hospital Damaturu.”
Some locals suspected the soldiers may have brought in a pipe abandoned by Boko Haram, which had explosives in it.
Mr. Okupe, a lieutenant, dismissed claims that the explosion had anything to do with Boko Haram.
He urged journalists to await the report from the Police Explosive Ordinance Department who investigating the cause of the explosion.

Governments not doing enough to protect Christians in the North – CAN

CanLogo
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has decried the recurring and unabated spate of the killings of Christians in the Northern part of the country on account of alleged blasphemy, stressing that such killings have become too many and requires urgent attention.

Recently, about eight persons were killed on Monday in Talata-Mafara community in Zamfara State following violence that erupted over alleged blasphemy by a student of the Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata-Mafara. The student was alleged to have made a blasphemous statement against Islam and Prophet Muhammad and was consequently attacked by a mob.

But the Chairman, Northwest Zone of CAN, Bishop David Bakare, while addressing newsmen in Kaduna yesterday, ‎said, “It has become necessary to make this statement in the face of the incessant unwarranted killing of Christians in Northern Nigeria.
“Northern Nigeria in recent time has become killing fields where Christians are murdered without restraints and governments at all levels are doing about it.
“In Kano, a Deeper Life church pastor’s wife was accused of blasphemy and killed, only for everyone to hear later that she never uttered any word of blasphemy against Islam or Mohammed.
“During Ramadan, a young man was attacked by Moslems and severely wounded in Kaduna because he was found eating during fasting.
“There is the well publicized hacking to death of a Redeemed pastor’s wife in Kubwa, FCT. And then the ECWA pastor who was murdered in Nasarawa State.

“Just last Friday, a Redeemed pastor was shot in his farm by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Kafanchan, Kaduna State. Few days ago in Zamfara State, a boy was accused of blasphemy and attacked. The incident led to the killing and burning of eight Christians in the state.
“Early this year, the Zamfara state government pulled down several Christian places of worship including an Anglican auditorium, a Catholic building and an NYSC Secretariat chapel among others.
“Beyond government rhetoric, nothing concrete has been done to stem the tide. These heinous crimes continue unabated. No arrest has been made, no one has been prosecuted. This inaction on the part of government leads one to say that governments at all levels have abdicated their responsibilities of securing lives, especially lives of Christians in Northern Nigeria
“On behalf of Christians and the CAN president, we call on the federal and state governments to rise to the occasion and ensure that this Zamfara incident is not treated as the other ones. Arrests must be made, the perpetrators must be made to face the full weight of the law so that justice will be seen to have been done. If these are done, then shall all Christians in Northern Nigeria have confidence that they are secured here,” he stressed.

Obasanjo Endorses Princewill’s Military Thriller 76’

…. As it Hits the World Stage
…..Set to Premiere First at the Toronto Film Festival
The eventual release of Prince Tonye Princewill’s Military Blockbuster, ’76’ would be an experience well worth the wait.
Mr Wabiye Idoniboye-Obu, the Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity to Prince Tonye Princewill who made this known in a statement said that the movie, which has been in production for over 6 years, and has passed the scrutiny of many movie critics, including having the full endorsement of the Nigerian Army; just recently got the nod of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo who became Head of State to succeed Murtala Mohammed whose assassination is depicted in the film.
“This is very good achievement for the Adonis production team as Gen Obasanjo was well placed in the Army hierarchy when the actual events depicted in this movie took place in 1976” the statement noted.

A private screening was held for the former president at his Presidential library in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The former President used the opportunity to reflect on the events of the past, and reemphasized the importance of the unity of Nigeria.

According to him, the killing of a Muslim on a Friday by a gang thought to be Christians, particularly when we remembered the first coup, which upturned the political situation in the country, gave a very bad signal. We thank God Dimka was caught. What this will amount to; where will it lead us to and how can we get us out of this mess? These were the questions Nigerians had in mind.
While describing the film as “a mixture of sweet and sorrow”, Obasanjo commended the team for the production. He said: “It will make us remind ourselves not to go back to the dark days, which put us in go-no-go situation. We might not yet have lived up to our best, but we have lived through our worst.”
He added: “We can have more of this, as there are more national issues that can be portrayed. We are capable of the best and that is what this film has shown,” he said.
The Executive Producer of the film, Prince Tonye Princewill, who led a delegation of the Cast and Crew including Rita Dominic, Izu Ojukwu and Chid Mokeme, responded saying the cast and crew of ‘1976’ were on tour of the country to seek support and stakeholder endorsement for the film, billed to premier in cinemas in November.

“The youth of today need to have a sense of the past, we have no sense of history, hence the resolve to have the film 1976, which is simply called ‘76”, he said.
Princewill said the visit to Obasanjo was important, “considering his position at that time in the country. He was there – in the front row. We deemed it wise to come and show him the film and curry his esteemed endorsement, which as you can see we have just got. We give all the glory to God.”

Hours after the former President gave his nod, the landmark cinematic production, hit another milestone by being the first all-Nigerian, made in Nigeria movie chosen to have its own world premiere at the prestigious 41st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This is the first of two in its world tour which is set to span across six continents.
According to the statement, “the film will have its specially laid out red carpet premiere on Sunday the 11th of September 2016 at the one and only Isabel Bader Theatre promises to be a truly unique & momentous occasion. All the key cast, crew and many special guests are all committed to walking the red carpet. Thanks to our Canadian media partners, the event will also be transmitted live via social media. A first for Nigerian audiences”
It would be recalled that the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the most recognized film festivals in the world – a very important partner in facilitating the rise of emerging Oscar contenders, and as a key precursor in the awards race, all eyes will be on TIFF’s full line up, which often hosts high-profile premieres of Oscar-bound movies.

FG set to swap Boko Haram detainees for Chibok girls

chibok1
Indications emerged Friday that the Federal Government has concluded plan to swap the Chibok girls with some Boko Haram members detained at various prisons across the country.

It was gathered that as part of the moves, security agencies had started conducting a fresh profiling of the Boko Haram detainees in line with a directive of the Federal Government.
Punch quoted insiders as saying that profiling would include the time they were arrested and the de-radicalisation programme they had undergone.

According to the report, police, the Nigeria Prison Service, the office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Justice would be involved in the process.
The source said the insurgents, who had not been tried could be the first beneficiaries of the deal.
The source added that the government had started addressing the problem.
He said, “I can assure you that the government is identifying genuine members of the sect it is negotiating with. We won’t repeat the mistake the immediate past government made by talking with those who will not produce the girls.

“Government is not opposed to swopping. Other countries, including Israel, have done it. In fact, security agencies are conducting fresh profiling of the sect members that are being detained. That is the first move. If there are sect members that have not been tried, they will be the first set to be considered under the arrangement.”

Change for good takes time, Bakare tells Nigerians

Bakare
The Serving Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Friday pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said the change being expected would take time.
Bakare, who was Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, spoke with State House correspondents after meeting the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said he was sure that the present administration would, in due time, respond to the yearnings of Nigerians.
The pastor said, “I will like to appeal to all Nigerians that we should just excise a bit of patience. This change will not become chain that will tie all of us down.
“Change for good takes time and we should just exercise a little bit more of patience. We trust that government is listening and the leaders are listening too and they will respond to the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.”

Bakare said when one is driving in the wrong direction and suddenly realises one’s mistake, there would be a lot of suffering in returning to the right direction.
“Pain is part of gain. No pain, no gain. The years of wastage and all that we have done wrong have finally caught up with us.
“All we are praying for is wisdom for this government to think right and to do the right things, so that gradually, we can begin to come out of the woods,” he said.
When asked to assess the present administration, Bakare said it was too early to do so.
On the purpose of his visit, he said, “I came to see the President and he is doing very well, health wise. That’s all I came to do.”

Crises claim 20,000 lives in Kaduna

El-Rufai
No fewer than 20, 000 persons have been killed in various violence in Kaduna State 1980s to 2016.

The state governor, Nasir El-Rufai made this known while inaugurating an International Centre for Inter-Faith Peace and Harmony, an initiative of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam and Christian Council of Nigeria.

He noted that Kaduna state before now used to be a home for all irrespective of religious and ethnic differences, but had over the years become a theater for religious and ethnic conflict.
“Kaduna was home to people from different religious and ethnic background, but since the beginning of the 1980s, it has witnessed 12 rounds of bloody violence that killed over 20,000 people and destroyed properties worth millions.
“Kaduna is now divided along religious lines, with the Muslims living on the northern part of the River Kaduna, while the Christians live in the southern part of the river.
“This is the state that we inherited, but the presence of this centre in the state is an indication that the people of Kaduna state would be united again,” he said.

Speaking further, El-Rufai accused some religious leaders of igniting violence for selfish reasons, adding that some had turned religion into a business
El-Rufai, therefore, urged religious leaders, particularly those under the Christian Association of Nigerian (CAN) and Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI), to deemphasize religious differences in their teachings, to ensure religious harmony.

Ijaw Youth Council Condemns Attempt To Connect Former President Jonathan To Niger Delta Avengers Origins

The umbrella body of the Youths in the Niger Delta region, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide has described as desperation by some politicians to rope in former President Jonathan into the formation of the Niger Delta Avengers. The IYC noted that they were appalled by the lead story published by some national newspapers especially The Nation Newspaper to the effect that intelligence reports indicate that Jonathan is one of the persons behind the formation of the Niger Delta Avengers.
Eric Omare, Spokesman for IYC in a statement said "the characters behind this desperate plan are the politicians of Niger Delta extraction who are in the present government and do not want a peaceful resolution of the renewed militancy in the region. They prefer a military option that would result in the killing of innocent Niger Deltans."
"The genesis of these frivolous accusations against former President Jonathan started after he visited President Buhari a few weeks ago and after the meeting while speaking with the media he said that everybody desires peace and that the leaders of the Ijaw nation are working hard to achieve peace in the Niger Delta region including himself."
"This did not go down well with these party chieftains and political office holders in the federal government from the Niger Delta region because they do not want a peaceful resolution of the crisis and secondly, they don’t also want Jonathan’s intervention to resolve the crisis for obvious political reasons. So this is the reason why they have orchestrated all sorts of lies to drag former President Jonathan into the formation of NDA. It is deliberate and we are sure the top hierarchy of government knows this fact.”
"We also strongly condemn the irresponsible journalism by some media houses for relying on concocted facts to write stories instead of hard facts. Former President Jonathan is advised to explore legal options to bring such irresponsible journalism to a stop.”

Price of Kerosene, Poor Man’s Cooking Fuel, Skyrockets

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has confirmed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has started implementing N150 per litre as the official depot price of kerosene, poor man’s cooking fuel. As things are, the price of a litre of this product will continue selling at the current price of about N300 per litre in some states, going by the explanation of Tokunbo Korodo, the South-west Chairman of the union.
“The NNPC did not include the transportation of the product or several levies and bank interests paid by marketers. Consequently, marketers will now add all these expenses to the depot price to arrive at N190, N200 or N220 depending on their locations,” explains Korodo. This kerosene crisis has been on for months, without any response from appropriate authorities. The masses of this country are in for tough times in the days ahead. This essential cooking fuel is now more expensive than petrol and diesel. As a result, many are going back to firewood for cooking, with attendant huge damage to our forest resources.

Progressive govt must maintain national minimum wage – Oshiomhole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole says for any government to make progress, it must maintain a national minimum wage.
Oshiomhole said this in Abuja on Wednesday during a forum tagged ‘The Podium’, organised by The Kukah Centre in collaboration with the Ford Foundation.
The programme, which seeks an interface between the electorate and policy makers, had the theme: “From Activism to Political Power: The Challenges of Democratic Governance in Nigeria”.
Oshiomhole noted that an employer who owed his staff has breached contract.
He said, “This is where I’m different. I still insist any government who wants to be taken seriously must have a national minimum wage.
“We must maintain a national minimum wage, look for ways to increase it; that is what I still advocate for.”
Giving an informal account of his stewardship and why he carried out most of his actions, the governor said he stayed true to his activism years by not owing salaries.
He explained that as a former factory worker himself, he understood the importance of wages and that was why he increased workers salaries in Edo by 38 per cent.
“Activism is not synonymous with being progressive. I believe we should all be idealistic and not dismiss the possibility of an ideal society.
“One man’s idealism is another man’s reality. Wages paid to people is not burden.
“In Edo we increased it to 38 per cent and I’m proud to still pay before the last day of every month.”
He explained that complaints about salaries from the state were mostly about the 18 months pension arrears he inherited and the inability of local governments to pay their staff.
“We respect the autonomy of the Local Government but we insisted that if they cannot do environmental sanitation, waste management, grading rural roads, cleaning up the market at least you must pay the teachers’ salaries.
“So I am not responsible for non-payment at that level. Non-payment of wages is a criminal breach in the law of contract.
“You can pay daily, weekly, monthly but not in excess of 30 days, you are breaching the agreement.”
Oshiomhole said as an activist he was in governance to know the ropes, know how to help people.
“I have been militant, will remain a militant and retire a militant not with guns. I don’t burst pipelines but we must react to sayings like the ‘if you can’t beat them join them’.”
The Chairman of the occasion, former Gov. Donald Duke of Rivers, said he advocates improvement in society.
“Sadly politicians in our society are merely jobbers and budget padders. We advocate improvement and not change.
“We had a violent change in 1966, so change is not necessarily the way to go. Improvements however makes things happen, develops societies and affects the people positively.”
Bishop Mathew Kukah, the Convener of the event, said the essence of the forum was to design programmes that encourage debate and free exchange of ideas.
“To serve as a mediating platform between the government, citizens and communities.
“Also, to enhance the quality of leadership training at all levels both in the public and non-governmental sectors.”
Activists from all sectors and relevant stakeholders attended the event.

Reformed Niger Delta Avengers Discloses How NDA Was Formed

Delta Militants
The Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) has threatened that should former President Goodluck Jonathan further deny being the Grand Patron of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), it will reveal more sordid details of their relationship.
The threat is contained in a statement on Wednesday signed by spokesperson “Cynthia Whyte, in which he said the very name, “Avengers”, was first mouthed by Mr. Jonathan.  “Cynthia Whyte” is an alias for the RNDA spokesperson.
Whyte noted that NDA had been formed to counter the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), but failed to achieve that objective, adding that it has not surprised the RNDA that Mr. Jonathan, as NDA Grand Patron, has distanced himself from the violent group.
“Like every sponsor, sympathizer and operative earlier mentioned who has equally denied links with the Avengers, we can understand the wisdom behind their decision; as their participation was always meant to becovert,” the spokesperson said.
Whyte recalled that following a clandestine meeting in Otuoke, Bayelsa State in 2014 between the GrandPatron and several unidentified persons ahead of the Presidential election campaign of 2015, it was agreed that the Okah brothers should be contacted to reach out to MEND to endorse Mr. Jonathan and to work with the group of persons to ensure victory for the PDP and President Jonathan.  MEND was the suggested tool at the time, the spokesperson said, because the NDA as a body was not yet formed.
“Mr. Kingsley Kuku and Mr. Gordon Obuah, [Special Adviser] on Niger Delta and Chief Security Officer to President Jonathan, respectively were selected to visit Charles Okah in Kuje prison,” the spokesperson said.  “Mr. Daniel Alabrah was given the assignment to draft an endorsement statement for Charles Okah to go through and pass on to MEND.
According to the account, both men reported back that they had visited Okah in Kuje prison at night with the promise of his release along with others should hecooperate to get MEND to endorse Jonathan.
“It therefore came as a shock when MEND did the opposite and endorsed Buhari. Mr. Jonathan was livid with anger and swore that the Okahs would rot in prison.
He said it was also agreed that a show of force be put up in Yenagoa, where ex-militants led by Government Ekpemupolo and Kingsley Kuku would threaten war should the electorate vote in Buhari's favour.
“It was around that period the idea of forming the Niger Delta Avengers was conceived. In fact the name "Avengers" came from the lips of Goodluck Jonathan.
“As election day approached, certain stakeholders were mobilized to form a force to standby and ensure total anarchy in the South-South and South-East within 24 hours if the election results were not favourable to Jonathan. It took everyone by surprise to learn that Mr. Jonathan had conceded defeat even before the final results were released. The standby force who were to attack specific targets were told to stand down. They were all compensated in US dollars cash.”
He further stated that the Niger Delta Avengers was born from the failure at the polls and would now be used as an organ to make the Buhari governmentungovernable, bring economic hardship and cause hatred for the administration towards failure at the 2019 general elections.
“MEND was aware of this plot through a spy that could not be identified, and the group began its campaign to counter every effort of the NDA and the Biafra agitators to this day,” the spokesperson said, adding that MEND has been a thorn in the flesh because its successful propaganda has caused the current split in the ranks of the NDA.
Whyte concluded: “If former President Jonathan provokes us further with denials of this revelation, we will reveal more sordid details. The prison authorities in Kuje who witnessed the closed door meeting from the outside can attest to that night visit of November 2014.”

We inherited 206 uncompleted roads – Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government inherited 206 uncompleted roads from the last administration.
He added that contractors of most of the projects had since been mobilised to site.
Fashola said his ministry was working with lean resources, adding that it was determined to do more in the interest of Nigerians.

The minister spoke in Abuja at a Town Hall/Policy Dialogue for Good Governance organised by the Alumni Association of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
The theme of the meeting which was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Culture was “Towards Effective Implementation of the 2016 Budget’’.
According to the him, the Federal Government has paid N300 billion for various projects since the budget was passed.
He added that of the sum received, the ministry had embarked on several road and electricity projects, including the rebuilding of the Mambilla and Zugeru Power Plants.
He, however, said that though the country was going through challenges, the change Nigerians desired was possible, if every one remained focus and determined.
“We are mindful that it is a tough time, but life will get back to normal. We are not a repository of knowledge; so we are willing to hear from you and make amends.’’
Fashola, however, debunked insinuations that he was saddled with too many responsibilities as a minister of three ministries combined.
He explained that his duty in the ministry was supervisory and directional, adding that the portfolio was not too much for him as was being speculated.
“For me, it is to serve my country in whatever capacity I am told to do so.”
He said that that one of the ministry’s greatest challenges was human-related, adding that some communities went to the extent of forestalling projects with spiritual power.

Why it’s diffcult to wipe out Boko Haram from North East – Army Chief

Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai
The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, says there are still remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in parts of the North East due to the vast nature of the region.
The chief of army staff stated this in a lecture to participants of Executive Course 38 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), in Kuru, Plateau on Tuesday.
“They still exist in the region, especially Borno, as the area is diverse and some cannot be easily accessed.
“The land is so vast, the North East is very, very vast; you never appreciate it until you fly over that area or even drive around.
“Those remote areas are so diverse and thick with very difficult terrain.
“Now that it is the rainy season, it is very difficult to move heavy equipment, heavy tracking vehicles into some of those areas. The best time is the dry season,’’ he said.
Mr. Buratai said President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to relocate the military control and command centre from Abuja to Maiduguri was highly profound and strategic in the counter insurgency operation.
“The movement of the military command and control centre to Maiduguri is one of the major responses of President Muhammadu Buhari toward the national security threat,’’ he said.

He also said the decision to relocate along with other service chiefs to the region to take charge and direct the operation was partly responsible for the current victory over the terrorists.
“We, service chiefs have not been in isolation. One has not been idle or kept himself out of the reality of the country as military officer, as a general, I kept track of what is going on.
“When I was appointed the chief of army, I said, this insurgency must stop, we must be responsive at all times, we should not wait and be reactive.
“I said our troops will never run away from these criminals – insurgents. We must hit them before they even come to us, not even to wait for them to attack and we repel, no.
“Immediately after my appointment, I moved to the North East.
“We – service chiefs must be part of the troops. If you want to respond properly, you must be with the troops, you must be aware of their day to day challenges.
“If you stay far away, there is no way you will understand.
“That is why I say I must be in the forefront, I must always be with the troops and that has really paid off seriously in re-aligning the morale of the troops.
“(That is why we are having) the direction, purpose, and indeed the eventual victory that we are having from day one to this moment’’, he said.
The army chief noted that collective effort was required in defeating the terrorists and acknowledged the roles being played by other arms of the security agencies, as well as the Civilian Joint Task Force.
He said insurgents that were fleeing to other parts of the country were being arrested daily with the help of members of the civilian joint task force.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the lecture was titled: Responding to National Security Threats: The Nigerian Army Perspective.

NNPC dismisses reports on increase in fuel prices

New Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru
Dr. Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), on Tuesday, dismissed reports that the corporation will soon announce an increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Baru speaking with newsmen shortly after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said, so far the request for forex for the importation of petrol had been met and the NNPC’s supply situation was “robust.”
Oil marketers had on Monday asked Nigerians to prepare for another increase in the pump prices of petrol due to the continued scarcity of foreign exchange to finance the importation of the product.
According to them, the United States dollar hit an all-time high last week, as it exchanged for N400 at the parallel market.
Baru, however, denied any knowledge of the price increase, saying that there was no directive to that effect.
He said that importers of the commodity had no justification to increase the price as their foreign exchange demands had been met and supply of the fuel was robust.
“I have not been directed to increase pump price, even the other price was based on recommendation from the regulatory body.
“I’m not aware that they are planning to do any increase, you know there are several factors that necessitated that ,especially the issue of exchange rate that has moved and we don’t expect any serious changes.
“So far the request for forex for importation of gasoline, popularly called petrol, has been met and our own supply situation is robust, we are meeting demands.’’
The managing director, however, revealed that Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) could review the prices of petroleum products when necessary.
He said that NNPC currently had in stock over 1.4 billion litres of PMS for sale to the public at government-controlled price of N145 per litre.
“We have over 1.4 billion litres on ground.
“So, I don’t see any basis for increase; however, the review could be done by the right body, you should contact PPPRA, that is the regulatory body as far as petrol pricing is concerned,’’ he said.

Jonathan’s government cancerous, PDP should forget 2019 – Fr. Mbaka

Mbaka1
Enugu Catholic Priest, the Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has once again taken former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to the cleaners, describing his days in office as full of mess and cancerous to the economic life of the nation.
His recent declaration entitled: “FR MBAKA’S ASSERTION ‘THERE IS HUNGER IN NIGERIA’, NOT AN ATTACK ON PRESIDENT BUHARI”, came as a reaction to recent media reports where he was quoted to have bashed President Muhammadu Buhari over the level of suffering in the country.
In a statement he issued through his spokesman, Barr Maximus Ike Ugwuoke, the cleric said he observed with keen concern the news trending some sections of the media that he “attacked” President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mbaka maintained that he didn’t attack Buhari but told him the situation of things in the country and as well suggested ways out.
He stated that “the news headline is not only sensational but also a censorious media colouration and hype of the message of the cleric titled ‘Bless and Be Blessed’ for whatever ends.”
While admitting that he lamented the level of hunger and suffering in the country, the fiery priest said it was followed by another ‎message where he explained that Buhari was not responsible for the situation but the previous administration.
He declared that the “Bless and Be Blessed” message that was misunderstood was followed by a message titled “Mega Change of Conditions”.
According to him, the second message, where he absorbed the President of blames over the hunger situation in the country read:
“There is sword that is moving about in the country. People are dying like flies. The sword of Hunger is eating the land. And as I have told you this is just the beginning. If anybody is telling you it is going to be well very soon that person is deceiving you. This is because many of us were among those that were alive during the years of the past government. The past PDP government was a grasshopper and locus to Nigerian. The past Government was a disaster to the land of Nigeria; the past government was cancer to this country. There is no need trying to cover their incalculable and iniquitous mess. If you don’t feel it now, you will feel it later.
“The impact of their horrific mess is yet to be felt. It was a regime where hooliganism became a political slogan; where looting became the order of the day; where the neglect of youths became a pattern of administration. The result is what we are passing through now. Hunger is everywhere; the hunger was created before this new government came in. Buhari is not the maker of the hunger.
“The hunger was created during the Jonathan PDP administration but Buhari should abate the long procrastination, bureaucracy and slow methods in tackling it.
“Understand it very well. People will know the truth and the truth will set us free. Buhari is just an agent of change. The money in our treasury was nothing to write home about before this new regime came. The country was in an embarrassing mess.
“Apart from the petroleum that we sell and get money, what other means of foreign exchange do we have? The foundation of the Nigerian economy is oil which has now collapsed and the foundation once destroyed what will the just man do? Psalm 11:3. The past administration did not prepare this administration for this season. That is why the sword has risen. Many will die by this sword but there will be survivors.
“That is why I have been saying and I keep on saying that the past administration should publicly come to apologize to the Nigerians. They should not be foolhardy. They should not continue to perpetrate this type of iniquitous attitude planning about 2019 election for them to continue from where they stopped. All these years of Jonathan, nothing happened in Niger-Delta specifically to be recorded in the annals of history. What a shame? What an embarrassment. The place where the oil has been coming from remained underdeveloped under a man from the same soil. If you go to Niger Delta today you will cry. But what worries me is that our people are good in shifting blames.
“Somebody entered your kitchen carried your pot of soup, enter your store and farm raked everything in the store and farm and ran away. And another person enters the kitchen where there is no pot at all and you want the person to turn the kitchen into a magical kitchen that will produce a magical pot and a magical soup, which soup?
“I am just telling president Buhari that people are hungry because he cannot not come to the street like me and notice people’s feelings. But Buhari is not the author of the hunger. The past government planted the tree of hunger and they want to come back to water it. If it is in a developed country by now from the Senatorial to the reps to the governors, all who participated in the last administration should have resigned with apologies to our youths, otherwise the youths one day will begin to stone them.
“They will soon confuse you that present governments don’t want to feed you, feed you with what? It will surprise the whole Nigerians to know that even after Buhari was a petroleum minister and a military president of the country, he had no oil bloc. Is it not a shock? Don’t you hear the quantum of money that is being recovered from one person? Buhari just came as a redeemer. I don’t know if the people of this country are hypnotized.
“How can we be fighting somebody who is fighting for us? Apart from this Buhari, how can somebody talk to these political juggernauts and tell them to bring back what they have stolen? it is only a Beniah personality like Buhari that can enter into the cave and catch a lion and kill a lion in a snow season and come out. The president needs support. He doesn’t know where to begin because there are many holes dug for him by the past administration, and they carried the sand away expecting him to cover the holes with what?”.
“He, therefore maintained that ‎contrary to the media report Fr. Mbaka “merely reinstated the obvious sufferings that Nigerian are facing (which even the president himself had at points acknowledged and sued for patience and perseverance) and advised the president on the ways to tackle it i.e by engaging economic gurus and listening to good advisers.
“We wonder which portion of the message could be viewed as “an attack” or” bombing” of Mr President as twisted in the media. The acclaimed message of the cleric to Mr President to us is rather a further demonstration the cleric’s love to see that the president succeeds in his messianic rescue operation mission in Nigeria and that is why it is devoid of hypocrisy.
“It is obvious that those who are arm-twisting the said message of the cleric to Mr President as an attack on Mr President are those who want the president to fail or be blindfolded so as to use the obvious hardship Nigerians are facing as a weak point of his administration to ride onto power mindless of the fact that Mr President has done so well in fighting corruption and insurgency in the country, which are mega achievements that scores him above average in just few months of his administration.
“In the background of the message, Fr Mbaka encouraged the gallant warrior, President Buhari, to continue his battle against corruption and insurgency asserting that if not a man like President Buhari, by now people may have stopped going to church and mosques. Boko Haram might have wrecked this country. People might have equally stopped going to schools, markets etc. Kudos to Buhari .Fr Mbaka revealed that corruption, insurgency and poor governance by past governments gave birth to three horrible children (1) Hunger (2) Anger (3) Danger.
“He asserted that Buhari is not the cause of corruption and insurgency yet he is fighting them frontally and enjoined the president to extend same to hunger even though he is not the cause. He pleaded the President to begin a War against Hunger, as many are dying hopelessly. He stressed that if the hunger, anger and danger continue, Nigerians may not vote for him again, as they would mistake him for the cause of these maladies while in fact he is a solution.
“Fr Mbaka equally advised the President on being careful about how he appoints people to prominent positions, so that no region will appear marginalized- as happened in NNPC board and charged the President to make sure that those around him are not misguiding him. He advised the President on human empowerment and making sure that those who worked for him (Buhari) during the election ought to be empowered –as one good turn deserves another.
“For the purpose of clarity, granted that Fr Mbaka stated the obvious , that there is hunger in the land, he never attributed the cause of the hunger and economic hardship bedeviling the nation to Buhari rather he attributed it to the offshoot of the actions and inactions of the past administrations of this country.
“We recall that earlier this year, Fr Mbaka had during his New Year message predicted that hunger and hardship will come upon the country this year and so we wonder why this message should make a headline at this point of the year.”

Niger Delta Avengers Split, Breakaway Faction Promises To Expose Those Behind Attacks On Oil Installations

A crack has appeared within the ranks of the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), with the breakaway group announcing itself as the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA). The split was announced in a statement signed by one Cynthia White.
According to the statement, the RNDA decided to split from the Niger Delta Avengers after appeal by former President Goodluck Jonathan and its conviction that the peace initiative of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is genuine. The RNDA added that it also experienced a feeling of guilt over the damage being some to the Niger Delta on our environment at a time the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has shown commitment to the cleanup of the Niger Delta environment.  The new group promised to reveal the identities of those behind the resurgence of violence in the oil-producing region.
"We have decided to join the MEND Aaron Team 2 peace initiative through the clearing house of Niger Delta Dialogue and Contact Group (NDDCG) headed by HRH King Alfred Diette-Spiff.
"We will also cooperate with the government by exposing the identities of our comrades who remain stubborn in their insistence to continue attacks.
"For example, it will shock the nation to know the Jekyll and Hyde personality behind the pseudonym 'Brigadier General Murdoch Aginibo' and our sponsors," the group threatened.
It also called on members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to take advantage of the olive branch concession secured by MEND to the agitation for a Biafra Republic, which it branded an anachronism.
"Those advising Mr. Kanu (Nnamdi) to do otherwise do not love him nor appreciate the level of treason this simple act of common sense and humility can extricate him from.
"The Niger Delta will no longer be your proxy in a war to achieve your ambition.
"To our comrades in the NDA, we urge you to stop being defiant and embrace peace and the wise counsel we all received from former President Jonathan," counseled the RNDA.

Economy: Prices of rice, beans, maize soar at Lagos market

Market-women
The prices of commodities like imported rice, maize , beans, palm oil, sorghum and others have continued to rise at the Mile 12 Market in Lagos.

This is reflected in the commodity index update, prepared by Novus Agro Nigeria Ltd, an agro-based firm, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
According to the index, a 50kg bag of imported rice currently selling at N16,857 was sold for N14,800 last week, thus recording a whopping N2,057 increase.

Miss Avaado Gaadi, Enumeration specialist at the firm, told NAN earlier that increase in the price of imported rice was as a result of restrictions on imported commodities.
Gaadi said that the restriction was to uphold the Federal Government’s drive to diversify the economy, through promoting consumption of locally-produced commodities.
Meanwhile, the paint bucket measurement of imported rice has also increased to N1,457 as against N1,333 sold last week.
Also, a 100kg bag of beans, which has been on a continuous increase since June, now attracts N25,714, as against N24,000 it attracted last week; while the paint bucket measurement remained stable at N900.

However, the 100kg bags of maize, sorghum, onions and 25-litre container of palm oil were on the increase at the market.
Maize attracted N12,829, as against N11,375 it was sold for last week, recording a difference of N1,454, while the paint bucket measurement increased slightly from N500 to N507.
Sorghum now selling for N11,571 was sold for N10,313 last week, thus attracting an increase of N1,258, while the paint bucket measurement increased from N500 to N507.
Also, onions increased slightly to N16,143 from N16,125, recording N18 increment, while the 2kg measurement remained unchanged at N500.
A 25-litre keg of palm oil increased to N7,286 from N7,063 it sold for last week, while the bottle measurement also increased from N250 last week to N280 this week.
While soya beans remained unchanged at N17,000 per 100kg bag, the 60kg and 100kg bags of garri and groundnut dropped in price.
Garri, which now goes for N12,614, was sold for N12,763 last week; while groundnut now sells for N25,000, as against the N25,500 it attracted last week.
However, the paint bucket measurement of both commodities remained unchanged at N600 and N950 respectively.
