I was removed in 1985 for ignoring IMF, World Bank advice- Buhari

I was removed in 1985 for ignoring IMF, World Bank advice- Buhari
President Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday recalled reasons for his removal as military Head of State in 1985.
According to him, his refusal to adhere to an advice from the IMF, World Bank to devalue the naira and increase prices of fuel and flour, led to the coup against him.
Buhari spoke on Friday night when he was hosted in Abuja by the Army at the Guards Brigade Regimental Dinner and presented with the captured Boko Haram flag.
” I refused and gave my reasons and the next thing I knew I was removed and detained for three and half years.
“As a civilian president I will do my best and I’m telling you all these because you are part of the leadership of this great country and God willing we will remain great.”
President Buhari, who narrated his early military life in Abeokuta and subsequent redeployment to Zaire (now Congo), said he was almost killed while on duty even before getting his first salary as an officer.
He said stated he was conversant with the problems of the military having spent over 25 years in the service.
President Buhari has challenged the Nigerian Army to ensure the unity of the country despite what he described as “political madness in the North East, the Niger Delta or in the East” of the country.

Sorry folks, you'll have to wait longer than you thought to say goodbye to 2016

Sorry folks, you'll have to wait longer than you thought to say goodbye to 2016
The Big Ben

If you are one of those people who can’t wait for 2016 to be over, then bad news – you’ll have to wait a second longer.
Yes, a whole extra second.
Counting down to 2017 will take longer than usual this New Year’s Eve to compensate for a slowdown in the Earth’s rotation.
Timekeepers at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are introducing a “leap second” after 23:59:59 on December 31 – delaying midnight by a second.
We have to add, though, this isn’t the first time NPL has added a leap second to a year.
The extra seconds are introduced every two or three years. In fact, the last one was inserted just 18 months ago in June 2015.
So what exactly is a leap second?
The adding of the leap second is to ensure that time based on the Earth’s rotation does not lag behind time kept by atomic clocks.
The extra seconds are occasionally necessary because of unpredictable changes in the speed at which the Earth turns on its axis. They are introduced in the last minute of either December or June, or rarely March or September.
NPL, based in Teddington, London, is the UK’s national measurement institute and the birthplace of atomic time.
Peter Whibberley, a senior research scientist with NPL’s time and frequency group, says: “Leap seconds are needed to prevent civil time drifting away from Earth time.
“Although the drift is small – taking around 1,000 years to accumulate a one-hour difference – if not corrected it would eventually result in clocks showing midday before sunrise.”
The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, based at the Paris Observatory in France, tracks the Earth’s rotation and announces when a leap second is needed roughly six months in advance.
However, leap seconds can cause problems for communication networks, financial systems and other applications that rely on precise timing and has to be programmed into computers to avoid mistakes.
It is also possible for a second to be removed from the UTC (Universal Co-ordinated Time) timescale, although this has never happened.

Magu not sacked as EFCC chairman – Presidency

Magu not sacked as EFCC chairman - Presidency
Magu

The Presidency on Saturday dismissed report that Mr. Ibrahim Magu has been sacked as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, in series of tweets on his Twitter handle, (@GarShehu, said no report has been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney General of the Federation on the matter.”
He twitted:
“We are reading reports that the @officialEFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu has been sacked.”
“No report has been made available to the Presidency by the Attorney General of the federation over the matter.”
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also dismissed the report as untrue. “No truth in the story making the rounds that Magu has been removed as EFCC boss. The AGF is yet to submit his probe report to the President,” he said on his Twitter handle.
The Senate had earlier this month rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Magu as EFCC, chairman, saying security reports made him ineligible for the office.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also dismissed the report as untrue.

How we will transform Nigeria in 2017 — Buhari

buharis-campaign
President Buhari

My dear Compatriots,
I am happy to welcome you to the beginning of a New Year in our beloved country Nigeria.
I felicitate with you today at a time when our nation is witnessing a new and impressive turnaround in our security and socio-economic situation.
I know you will join me to, once again, congratulate the heroic and gallant efforts of our military and other security agencies on their remarkable successes to rid the nation of terrorism.
Following the successful capture of Sambisa Forest, spearheaded by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, we have entered a new phase in our battle against our common enemy, Boko Haram.
When we see our beloved 21 Chibok girls reuniting with their families and community for Christmas, it gives us the hope that those who are still in captivity will one day return to the loving arms of family, friends and well-wishers.
I urge all Nigerians to be on the alert and watch out for strange figures settling in their communities, and report to the nearest security agencies, as our armed forces intensify the pursuit of fleeing terrorists from the captured Sambisa Forest.
Misguided elements who decided to take up arms against constituted authorities must be brought to face the full weight of the law.

The support of all Nigerians to security agencies to enable them successfully execute their mandate is crucial in our bid to effectively secure our country.
Seeing the joyful return of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to Damasak town in Borno State, following the reopening of Maiduguri/Gubio/Damasak road in Northern Borno on December 25, 2016, reassured us that the voluntary return of IDPs in other parts of the country is imminent.
The Federal Government will spare no effort in seeing to the resettlement and rehabilitation of the unfortunate victims of terrorism and insurgency. I urge state governments, privileged Nigerians, donor agencies and countries to redouble their contributions towards this goal.
Government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits.
In this New Year, I want to reassure all Nigerians that our defence and security forces are more than ever before ready to perform their constitutional role of protecting lives and property in the country; and we will surely overcome all other forms of security challenges.
The lingering security issues in several states will be frontally addressed. These ugly crises cannot be allowed to fester as they strain the unifying bonds of brotherhood and neighbourliness. Some sections of the press and some politicians should avoid provocative and inflammatory statements, while the government is painstakingly trying to find solutions to our challenges.
I want to remind you on the first day of this New Year of an African proverb that says “it is easy to break a broomstick but not a bunch”. Nigeria is a bunch and is more than equal to troublemakers.
I have interacted with a broad spectrum of Nigerians, the old and the young, and they have told me unequivocally that they believe in the unity and stability of Nigeria.
The year 2017 provides an opportunity for us to build on those aspects of our national life that unite us. We are courageous, hardworking, hospitable, steadfast and resilient people, even in the face of difficulties.
These are the attributes that define us and have for years confounded the pessimists who do not believe in our continued existence as a united and indivisible nation. We are a remarkable nation that has succeeded in harnessing our multiple diversities for national development. We must continue to support and tolerate one another and live together as one.
We will continue to pursue peace initiatives in the Niger Delta as I again, call on our brothers in that region who have taken to violent disruptions of economic infrastructure to come to the negotiating table.
As for our brothers and sisters of the Shia Community, we urge them, too, to embrace peace. They must accept the laws of the country they live in. They cannot be islands by themselves. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies must treat them humanely and according to the rule of law.
On our part, in the past 20 months since our inauguration on May 29, 2015, we have focused our energies to turn around the economy, create jobs, fight corruption, and transform agriculture to replace oil and gas as a major revenue earner for the nation. I am encouraged that we are getting things right.
The agricultural revolution has begun.  Farmers in different parts of the country are experiencing bumper harvests; states are getting into strategic partnership towards attaining self-sufficiency in rice, and the era of over-dependence on oil for foreign exchange revenues is gradually waning. I am optimistic that the CHANGE we all yearned for in voting this administration to power in 2015 will manifest more and be sustained in different sectors, particularly agriculture, in 2017.

Serena Williams engaged to Alexis Ohanian

They do: Serena Williams' boyfriend, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, popped the question during a surprise trip to Rome (couple above)
The couple, Serena and Ohanian

Serena Williams is engaged to be married.
The tennis star revealed on Thursday that her boyfriend of almost two years, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, popped the question after whisking her away on a surprise trip to Rome.
Williams, 35, shared the news on Reddit by posting a poem, writing: 'At the same table we first met by chance / This time he made it not by chance / But by choice / Down on one knee / He said 4 words / And I said yes.'
Ohanian, 33, later posted Williams' poem to his Facebook account, writing: 'She said yes.'
He also commented on her poem on Reddit, writing: 'And you made me the happiest man on the planet.'
Williams revealed in her poem that she came home to find her bags packed and ready to go for the surprise trip that Ohanian had planned for them.
'Someone had a bag packed for me / And a carriage awaited / Destination: Rome / To escort me to my very own "charming" / Back to where our stars first collided,' wrote Williams.
She also included a graphic that showed her dressed in her tennis gear and floating on air as Ohanian presented her with a large diamond.
Williams, who is notoriously private about her personal life, has never spoken about her relationship with Ohanian in the press.
The news that the pair met in Rome suggests however that they first met in May of 2015, as Williams plays the clay court tournament in the Italian city every year ahead of the French Open.
Williams and Ohanian were first spotted together at dinner in San Francisco back in November of 2015 thanks to surveillance video that was later released by the restaurant.
During that date, a man stole Williams phone off the table and then rushed out of the restaurant.
Once Williams noticed what had happened she quickly got up, made her way through the crowd, and caught up with the man outside.
In the end, the man sheepishly returned the device and Williams returned to her meal.
Over the past year, Ohanian has become Williams' biggest cheerleader on social media, documenting her accomplishments both on and off the court.
This past May he posted a photo of Williams playing in Rome, a tournament she would go on to win, writing: 'A year ago today, I became a tennis fan. One of the best decisions I ever made.'
Two months later, he documented Williams historic win at the All England Club, writing: 'Our queen stopped by center court today. So proud of you, @serenawilliams. 22 looks good on you. #Wimbledon.'
He then posted again later that same day when Williams and her sister Venus captured their sixth Wimbledon title in Ladies Doubles, writing:  'It was a good day. These two are ready for Rio. #wimbledon.'
Ohanian also took his mother to sit in Williams' box during the tournament.
In September, when Williams broke yet another record at the US Open, Ohanian posted a photo and wrote: '308th career Grand Slam match win for the greatest, @serenawilliams - taking time out for her fans on her way to 309 and many more.'
And a few days after her devastating loss in that tournament he sat front row at her fashion show, snapping a pic as she took her final bow after the collection.
'Congrats on a great show @serenawilliams - so proud of you. Well on your way to dominating another industry. #NYFW #blurry,' wrote Ohanian.

2019: Buhari deploys master stroke against Atiku

Presumably to kick-start his presidential ambition, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, visited the National Chairman of his party, APC.
Atiku’s last known visit to the Party’s secretariat was during the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in April.
President Muhammadu Buhari was also in attendance.
Curiously, Atiku visited the National Chairman in his office with the full coterie of his media team.
The meeting was behind closed doors and its outcome sealed.
Recall that Atiku had once stated that President Buhari is a leader, but not a Politician.
Recently, he has lent his voice to the restructuring of Nigeria – a thing President Buhari hates to hear.
He has openly berated the Buhari led government stating that his administration “Has refused to learn from the mistakes of past governments.”
His recent comments on national issues and his visit to his party’s secretariat confirmed that he still harbors a presidential ambition.
To checkmate Atiku, and on Tinubu’s advice, Buhari went for the Jugular.
His first move was to direct the Adamawa State chapter of the APC to beg Ribadu to return to the party.
The move angered Atiku and the State Governor, Jibrilla Bindow.

The calculation is this: If Ribadu returns to APC, he may be given a top position in next political administration.
This will neutralize Atiku’s camp, since the Party will not both support Atiku and Ribadu for top positions since they hail from the same State.
Prominent politicians behind Ribadu’s return includes ex-Governor Murtala Nyako, the Secretary to the Federal Government, Babachir David Lawal and the state and local government chapters of the party.
The State chapter of APC wrote Ribadu.
Parts of the letter reads: “We are mindful of the efforts and contributions you made during the merger without which the merger would have been difficult.
“To this end, we reaffirm our request for you to come home to APC and assist and contribute to the success of the APC government both at the state and national levels.”
Defending the letter, APC stated that “Ribadu did so much for APC in Adamawa State.
“The setback he suffered by ex- Vice President Atiku made him to go to PDP.
“He worked tirelessly to prevent the impeachment of ex-Governor Murtala Nyako.
“The insincerity of APC leaders in the state made Ribadu to defect to PDP against his own volition.
“So, he left APC as a result of local politics.
“It was a state affair but today things have changed.

“Today Nyako is vindicated and Umar Fintiri is under investigation by the EFCC.
“We are now out to correct the past by asking him to return to APC because Nyako has been vindicated.
“Ribadu has also been justified because he insisted that Nyako was a victim of political vendetta and abuse of power. Nyako is back.
“We have realized that we have all wronged Ribadu. We want him back.”
The political maneuver worked.
Ribadu immediately accepted to return. He has in fact returned.
APC further stated that “Constitutionally, you cannot stop anybody from joining a party.

“We told the delegation that it is a state issue. If the state executives of APC accept Ribadu, we cannot reject him.
“We will however do our best to reconcile all members of the party, whether old or new.
“Our ultimate target is to keep the APC family united.”
It was also gathered that President Muhammadu Buhari’s supporters endorsed the return of Ribadu.
In other words, Atiku may have been politically emasculated at least within the fold of APC.

Oyegun: APC Not Threatened by Proposed Mega Party

John Odigie-Oyegun
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun

Ahead of the 2018 governorship elections in Ekiti and Ondo States, as well as the 2019 general election, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, yesterday declared that his party does not in anyway feel threatened by the much talked about formation of a “mega party” to challenge the ruling party.
Instead, he said that those behind it should be encouraged to go ahead with the proposed party so as to create a formidable opposition to the ruling APC.
Oyegun, who also absolved former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the National Leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu of their alleged involvement in the formation of the new party, stated that he had met with some of the leaders of the APC, including the leadership of the National Assembly and the former vice-president.
He added: “We are also waiting for the arrival of Tinubu so we can also meet with him and have meaningful discussions because he is a well respected leader of this party.”
Speaking with journalists in Benin City yesterday, the APC boss said: “We do no feel threatened at all, no mega party will survive the APC. I don’t know where the name mega party suddenly came from in the lexicon of politics in this country.
“When two people gather to have a meeting it is a ‘mega’ meeting. We don’t feel threatened, we will in fact encourage a mega party, because with the gradual collapse of PDP, we want a party that can make us sit up and be on our toes in terms of the delivery of services to our people.
“We need a party that will challenge us, that will make democracy real, offer the people a real choice. We are not threatened at all, we are focused on our mission made difficult by the current economic situation, which of course is compounded by the collapse of oil prices.
“Nonetheless, we are reforming this country, reforming it ethically, morally and economically by building a fresh economic base which will no longer depend on an extractive industry which does not involve the people.
“Now we are pushing agriculture, so most Nigerians are in the field of agriculture. We are pushing extractive minerals which of course are virtually all over the country, so a lot of Nigerians will be involved in that enterprise.
“We are pushing for power generation and distribution because that will also energise small and medium scale businesses. So we want an economy in which most Nigerians are participants, it is no longer an oil economy which is highly technologically based.”
He noted that the APC-led federal government was dealing with a different reality that it is trying to build and establish.
“It involves sacrifices and hard work. But what is necessary today is that we are focused. What is real today is that the government of President Buhari is passionate about seeing this thing to its logical conclusion.
“This nation must change and the change is so fundamental that there is no question at all that a lot of people are going through temporary hardship, but the situation is such that tomorrow, everybody will be glad that we pursued this line of development in spite of the problems we are facing currently,” he explained.
Atiku, Tinubu have been linked to talks with a faction of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi to form a new opposition party to challenge the hegemony of the APC in the forthcoming elections

Falana Warns Women against Taking Back Seat in Ekiti Guber Poll

Funmi Falana

Mrs. Funmi Falana, wife of Lagos Lawyer, Femi Falana has declared that it would be disastrous for Ekiti women to take the back seat as the state prepares for another governorship election in 2018.
Mrs. Falana said Nigerian women must take every opportunity of electioneering process to prove a point that they are important and competent like their male counterparts, to establish gender equality in the country’s governance and reverse the trend of male chauvinism that is taking root in Nigeria.
Lamenting the non-release of the over 200 chibok girls seized by Boko Haram insurgents, Falana advised President Muhammadu Buhari to expedite action and ensure that all the girls are released from captivity, adding that the failure of government to achieve this will dent the image of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.
She said this in Iyin Ekiti yesterday while donating materials to the Erelu Angela Adebayo Children’s Home to mark the annual gift presentation to the orphanage.
Falana, who described women as the pivot of any nation said: “Women will not take the back seat in Ekiti governorship poll. We are embarking on advocacy programmes through my organisation ‘Women Empowerment and Legal Aids’ to help our women realise their potentials and rights.
“Time has come for women to present themselves for both elective positions and appointments to prove that they are as competent and important as their male counterparts.
“Some used to say that the African culture has not been fair to women.
“I want to believe this is not so, because our culture respects our roles and that is why we had the Iyalodes and the Iyalojas in the old days. So, what women are suffering today are human creations and we have to fight back to reclaim our lost glories,” she stated.
Falana told President Buhari to live up to his promise to free all the Chibok girls, expressing regret that the girls were still being held hostage after two years.
“We thank God that some of them have been released. We are pleading with government not to stop at the level of retrieving them alone, they should give all the girls psychological rehabilitation first.
They must ensure that those that are supposed to go back to schools are helped to realise that.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that these girls need rehabilitation and the support of every Nigerian to recover from this trauma. The government must not abandon them, they should give them scholarships for them to realise their dreams and become a pride to this nation,” she advised.

Buhari never declared Boko Haram war over – Presidency

buhari-2222
President Buhari

The presidency yesterday said President Muhammadu Buhari, at no time, declared that successes recorded by the Nigerian Military against Boko Haram have ended the war.
Femi Adesina, media adviser to the President said his principal was misinterpreted by the media.
The aide noted that President Buhari only commended the military when they took over the Sambia forest in Borno State.
“If you look at the President word-for-word, there is no place you will see him say that (the victory) signposts the defeat of the Boko Haram, no. It’s an interpretation by the press,” he told Channels TV.
“What the President did was to congratulate the military for taking over the last camp of the Boko Haram which is called camp zero.
“What that effectively means is that Sambisa forest which was like the last stronghold of the Boko Haram has been effectively taken over by the military.
“There will always be bitter enders at any given time. Even as Sambisa forest has been taken over, you will still find some elements who will continue to fight and they will be taken out eventually.
“This kind of war is not one that at a point you will say because Sambisa has been taken over, its over for now, no! It is over when we stop having strikes and attacks”, Adesina added.

No way you would’ve defeated me, Trump slams Obama

Image result for obama and trump
Obama and Trump

The war of words between outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama and incoming President Donald Trump continued with Trump rejecting Obama’s claim that he could have defeated him in the November 8 presidential election if he had run against him.
Trump, in a reply to the outgoing President’s claim, took to his twitter handle and wrote in capital letters: “NO WAY!”.
The president-elect also listed some policies under Obama’s administration, which he thought constituted baggage to the outgoing President, and would have made it difficult for Obama to be re-elected had the U.S. Constitution allowed him to contest for the third term.
He said, “President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me.

“He should say that but I say NO WAY! – jobs leaving, ISIS, OCare, etc,” Trump fired back at the outgoing president from whom he would take over on Jan. 20, 2017.
Obama had told his former senior adviser David Axelrod in an interview for the “The Axe Files” podcast, produced by the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN, aired on Monday that Americans still subscribed to his vision of progressive change, asserting that he could have succeeded in this year’s election if he was eligible to run.
He said, “I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilised a majority of the American people to rally behind it.
“I know that in conversations that I’ve had with people around the country, even some people who disagreed with me, they would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one.”
Obama, a former Illinois senator, still receives high popularity ratings among Americans, currently exceeding 50 per cent, one of the highest for a two-term U.S. president.
Obama had in his last Christmas address from the White House, listed some of his administration’s achievements in the last eight years.
He said, “Together, we fought our way back from the worst recession in 80 years, and got unemployment to a nine-year low.
“We secured health insurance for another 20 million Americans, and new protections for folks who already had insurance.
“We made America more respected around the world, took on the mantle of leadership in the fight to protect this planet for our kids, and much, much more.
“By so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we first got here. And I’m hopeful we’ll build on the progress we’ve made in the years to come.”
The two-term president said that there was a difference between Trump’s change mantra of 2016 and the hope-and-change vision he heralded in 2008, which won him outstanding victory over Republican John McCain.
“In the wake of the election and Trump winning, a lot of people have suggested that somehow, it really was a fantasy.
“What I would argue is, is that the culture actually did shift, that the majority does buy into the notion of a one America that is tolerant and diverse and open and full of energy and dynamism.”
NAN recalls that in the Nov. 8 presidential election, while Clinton beat Trump in the popular vote by almost 2.9 million ballots, Trump won more electoral votes and consequently, the presidency.
In the 50-minute session, Obama repeated his suggestion that Democrats had ignored entire segments of the voting population, leading to Trump’s win.
He implied that Clinton’s campaign had not made a vocal enough argument directed toward Americans who had not felt the benefits of the economic recovery.
“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency, just like in sports, maybe to play it safer.”
He, however, said he believed Clinton “performed wonderfully under really tough circumstances” and was mistreated by the media.
The podcast interview was Obama’s latest post-election analysis, which had focused on Democrats’ failure to convince non-urban voters and a media preoccupied with negative stories about Clinton.
Obama said his party this year had not made an emotional connection to voters in hard-hit communities, relying instead on policy points he said did not make enough of an impact.
“We’re not there on the ground communicating not only the dry policy aspects of this, but that we care about these communities, that we’re bleeding for these communities.
“It means caring about local races, state boards or school boards and city councils and states legislative races.
“And not thinking that somehow, just a great set of progressive policies that we present to the New York Times editorial board will win the day,” he said.
Obama cited an unlikely model for future Democratic success: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who he said had executed an effective – if obstructionist – strategy.
“Mitch McConnell’s insight, just from a pure tactical perspective, was pretty smart and well executed, the degree of discipline that he was able to impose on his caucus was impressive.
“His insight was that we just have to say no to that,” Obama said.
He said part of his post-presidential strategy would be developing young Democratic leaders, including organisers, journalists and politicians, who could galvanise voters behind a progressive agenda.
The outgoing president also said that he would not hesitate to weigh in on important political debates after he leaves office.

How ex-governor offered to refund N40m out of alleged N25bn loot

Danjuma-Goje dp
Senator Goje

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected the out-of-court settlement terms by former Gomber Governor, Senator Danjuma Goje, and four others.
Others are a former Gombe State Government House food supplier, Alhaji Sabo Mohammed Tumu; a former Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Aliyu Ubadone El-Nafaty; a businessman, S. M. Dokoro; and a firm, S. M. Dokoro Gombe.
The accused persons, who were first arraigned on October 17, 2011 are facing an 18-count charge bordering on conspiracy and money laundering of about N25billion.
Some of the charges include securing N5billion loan for infrastructural projects from without the approval of the House of Assembly; alleged diversion of N1.6billion meant for the purchase of dictionaries to other projects; alleged mismanagement of N1billion for commercial agriculture credit scheme under the supervision of the Central Bank of Nigeria; and award of N1.8billion food supply contract to the ex-governor’s cousin without bid process.
The Nation reports that the accused proposed an out-of-court settlement during a plea bargain negotiation session held between the EFCC team and their representatives.
The session had in attendance the prosecutor, Mr. Wahab Shittu, the Chief of Staff to the EFCC chairman, representatives from the Legal Unit of the anti-graft agency; the defence counsel, Mr. Paul Erokoro (SAN) and Goje’s representative.

A source said: “Goje and others only opted for an out-of-court settlement instead of plea bargain. They insisted that they have no case to answer because they allegedly committed no wrong. They vowed never to go into any plea bargain.
“At the end of the day, they offered to pay back only N40million to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), being accruable tax unpaid by the food supplier, who is standing trial.
“Later, the defence team reduced the amount payable to a ridiculous rate of N20million. They even added a clause that any payment effected should be credited to one of the accused persons and not Goje.
“They said once the terms are accepted, the EFCC should withdraw the charges against all the accused persons.”
“All the conditions are ridiculous. This is a case in which a former Clerk to Gombe State House of Assembly, Shehu Mohammed Atiku, has told a Federal High Court that the ex-governor forged the Resolution of the House and collected N5bn (five billion naira) facility from a bank.
“We already have a heap of evidence before the court to strengthen prosecution. We will go ahead with the trial of all the accused persons”.
Meanwhile, Justice B. O. Quadri has adjourned the matter till January 17 when the EFCC will tell that the out-of-court negotiation has collapsed.

Army ends Harrowing Operation Phyton Dance in the South-East

Army ends Harrowing Operation Phyton Dance in the South-East
Nigerian Army

The Operation Python Dance inaugurated by the Nigerian Army in the South East geo-political zone to curb crime in the area during the yuletide will end on Dec. 27.
The Deputy Director, Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. Sagir Musa, made the disclosure in a telephone interview on Monday.
The operation was launched to span from Nov. 27 to Dec. 27.
“The Exercise will end on Dec. 27, as earlier indicated.
“However, troops will still be massively around in the whole of South-East to continue with patrols, road blocks and check points.
“Nigeria’s South-East has not recorded incidence of armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and associated violence as well as inter-communal, herdsmen-farmers clashes during this Yuletide due to the on-going military exercise in the region tagged Operation Python Dance.
“These menaces are and have been the focus and targets of this exercise which has so far been successful,” Musa said.
The army spokesman said that the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Abubakar, visited Awka, Agulu, Nnobi, Ihiala and Okija communities in Anambra State on Dec. 25, to assess the conduct of troops.

He said the GOC was also at the Niger Bridge to assess the state of security and vehicular movements.
“It would be recalled that traffic gridlock has for many years, especially during the yuletide, been endemic on the Niger Bridge at both Asaba and Onitsha axis inflicting suffering and other inconveniences on road users.
“Hence, part of the target for the exercise is to check the usual gridlock, chaos and insecurity on the Bridge. This objective has so far been achieved.
“Since the start of Exercise Python Dance, there has not been any case of gridlock and associated insecurity on the Asaba-Onitsha Bridge.
“The orderliness, the disposition of combined security personnel and the manner the general public conducted themselves, especially the road users is commendable,” he emphasised.
Musa urged members of the public to remain security conscious and to report any suspicious movements and persons to security agencies nearest to them.

Tears for Osita, good man of arts community

Osita Ike

Poet and a former Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Chike Ofili practically screamed, asking, “Is Osita Ike too gone?’ He was likely to be lamenting against the background of the recent deaths of some other members of the arts community. Among them were Nike Adesuyi-Ojiekere and Ken Saro-Wiwa Jnr, a son of the late right activist and environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa.  Of course, those who have ample memory to store tragic occurrences will also recall how the likes of Austyn Njokun and Ebereonwu, who were members of the Lagos literati, died in their prime.
Ofili said, “Osita Ike had no airs whatsoever; in spite of being a prince. Humility better defined him. His dad, a frontline Nigerian writer, Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike of The Bottled Leopard, Expo 77, The Naked Gods, Our Children are Coming, The Search and other novels fame, I have known  since my university days as a visiting professor. His mother, a Yoruba woman and an Igbo wife, in and out of the Nigerian-Biafran war,  is a passionate librarian. The three always worked together; bound by the book cause. Ike was not just an only son like me, he was, he is, he will always be an only child. What could have so snatched his young life away?”
Another writer, Onyeka Nwulue, shared a recent memory of the deceased. According to him, they spent a good part of last year together.
He recalled how Osita messaged him and said, “My dear brother greetings. Thank you for putting Kenneth and I in touch. Bless you.’ That was when I introduced him to the film-maker, Kenneth Gyang, who had sought for the rights to the book, Sunset at Dawn, by his father, His Majesty, Eze Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, OFR, NNOM, Ikelionwu XI, Eze Ndikelionwu.”

Boko Haram: Nigeria government urges citizens to be vigilant

 Boko Haram
The Federal Government has called for increased vigilance among Nigerians as Boko Haram escapees seek to integrate themselves into communities, after being dispossessed of their Sambisa fortress.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who made the call in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, stressed that “eternal vigilance is the price of freedom’’.
“We urge Nigerians to keep our gallant and victorious troops in their prayers.
“Nigerians should also imbibe the mantra of ‘if you see something, say something’ as a way of ensuring that no escaped terrorist is able to wreak havoc in their communities.
“It is also important to know that now that they have been dispossessed of their fortress, the Boko Haram escapees will intensify their cowardly attacks on vulnerable targets if only to maintain an illusion of terror.
“There should be no panic because the worst is over,’’ he said.
The minister congratulated the gallant troops of the Nigerian military for finally seizing the Sambisa Forest from the Boko Haram terrorists and securing the North-East.
He said the feat had paved the way for Sunday’s re-opening of two strategic roads in Borno.
Mohammed appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the troops as they clear the remnants of the terrorists who were now on the run.

Surgeons had performed a tracheotomy to keep his airways open and he was unconscious for some of his time in hospital.
Michael's 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 had been set to be reissued.
It was due to be accompanied by a new film featuring Stevie Wonder, Elton John and the supermodels who starred in the video to his hit single Freedom! '90.
