PDP National Secretariat |
Heavily armed policemen, yesterday, sealed the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
The development happened 24 hours after the party witnessed its parallel conventions held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, and Abuja.
The development happened 24 hours after the party witnessed its parallel conventions held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, and Abuja.
At the Port Harcourt convention, Senator
Ali Modu Sheriff, the party’s controversial chairman, was replaced by a
former governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, while Senator Ibrahim
Mantu emerged as the party’s national coordinator at the Abuja
convention.
Sources said that the sealing of the PDP secretariat may not be unconnected with the sacking of Sheriff, a development that heightened tension in the party.
The heavily armed police personnel, who surrounded the secretariat, also barricaded all the entry points leading to the building.
They also stopped newsmen from gaining entry into the secretariat.
They said that they had “order from above” to execute their action
Our correspondent sighted over 12 Toyota Hilux patrol vans, trucks and other cars that conveyed senior police officers to the secretariat.
One of the police personnel, who craved for anonymity, said: “We were deployed from Kubwa Divisional Headquarters, but they did not tell us how long we would stay here.”
It was gathered that the order to seal the secretariat came from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase.
Our correspondent was told that workers at the PDP secretariat would be allowed into their office, while party leaders were being advised to stay away from the office, at least for now.
While the reason for the deployment of the police operatives by the I-GP was still unknown, the coordinator of PDP Governors’ Forum, Mr Osaro Onaiwu, said: “No single individual is bigger than our party. We are going to have a joint meeting of all the factions, including Makarfi, to resolve all the contentious issues.”
