Diego Simeone's introduction of Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco at the break proved to be crucial though, as the Belgian winger scored an equaliser with eleven minutes of normal time remaining to force the extra period.
With both sides struggling with fatigue in the sweltering heat, it took penalties to separate the two rivals and Juanfran proved to the heartbroken man, as he saw his penalty hit the post before Ronaldo stepped up and scored.
